The Ultimate Guide to Finding a Therapist

Ultimate Guide to Finding a Therapist

Okay, friend. I get it.

My amygdala wasn’t super-thrilled about the idea of spilling my guts to a total stranger either. Its immediate response was, “NOPE. Nuh-uh. I don’t think so, pal.”

However, hear me out. We live … in a world.

A world where humans have to contend with everything from politics to pandemics to the pressures of social media. (Also, were they serious about murder hornets?! Because those too.) Mix in all the complexities that come with relationships (or the lack thereof), unprocessed traumas, uncertainty about the future, work struggles, finances … whew!

Life can start to feel … pretty heavy.

Look, needing some extra support is a healthy and normal part of being human. (Errr … and being a Brain.)

Making the Call

But there’s good news. If you’ve decided to seek out therapy … well, that’s Big Brain stuff, my friend. Go you. That decision doesn’t have to be a scary one. But don’t worry – it’s completely normal if your first reaction is to run and hide.

Again, that just means you’re … normal.

(And brave. You my friend are very, very brave.)

So … where the heck do you start? You might be asking…

  • Should I see a psychiatrist or a social worker?
  • Why are there so many different therapy modalities and which one is right for me?
  • Do I want a more directive therapist, who assigns me homework? Or, do I want a therapist who focuses on free association?
  • What questions should I ask up front?
  • Do I really have to lay on a couch?
  • Where do I even LOOK for a therapist? Is there some kind of Tinder for therapists? (Hint: Sorta …)
  • What important insurance-related things should I take into consideration?

Here’s the truth. The perfect therapist doesn’t exist and sometimes you have to go through a few (or a lot) to find the right one for you. (Okay, this IS starting to sound more like dating…) But studies show over and over that the relationship between a client and the therapist is the thing that really heals. So it’s an important step and one you don’t want to skimp on.
